Chart structure (格局)

The month branch is the seat of the season, and the tradition calls it the 月令 — the command. It outranks every other position because it says what qi is in charge of the whole chart. Take the strongest thing stored in that branch, ask what it is in relation to your Day Master, and that relation names the structure.

So the vocabulary is the Ten Gods again, applied once, at the one position that matters most. If the month’s main qi is the Direct Officer to your Day Master, you have a Direct Officer structure; if it is Seven Killings, a Seven Killings structure. A finer reading tracks which stem inside the branch is on duty by the day-count from the season’s start — the month is not one flat thing — but the structure itself keys to the main qi.

Then four questions follow, and they are the whole of this page: does the structure become coherent? is it damaged? is it pure or mixed? does it have useful support?

You will see five, eight, or ten, depending on the source, and none of them is lying: they are grouping the same relations differently. 明命｜MING’s set follows from the method rather than from a preference for a round number.

Eight ordinary structures, one for each relation the month can be to you: Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Seal, Indirect Seal.

And the special cases, which arise when the month gives the Day Master its own kind — a Peer or a Rob Wealth. There is nothing left to “use” in the usual way, because the month is simply you, so the structure is named for that situation instead: 建禄 when the month gives a Peer, and the Blade structure (羊刃格) when it gives a Rob Wealth. That last name is worth a note: the classics reserve 阳刃 for yang Day Masters and call the yin version 月劫, but the lineage 明命｜MING reads from names both the Blade, so the product does too — while the underlying type, and the routes it takes to find what the chart needs, stay exactly as the classics set them.

Here is the part that makes structure usable, and it is the part most sources skip. A structure is not simply present — it is graded: it forms (成), it breaks (破), or it is rescued after breaking (救应).

And the rule for forming depends on which family the structure belongs to, because the two families work by opposite logic.

The constructive gods — Officer, Wealth, Seal, Eating God — are things you want to keep. They form by being produced or protected: Wealth likes output feeding it, the Officer likes Wealth generating it and the Seal shielding it. They break by being attacked, drained or clashed — the Officer met by Hurting Officer, the Seal met by Wealth, Wealth met by Rob Wealth.

The difficult gods — Seven Killings, Hurting Officer, Rob Wealth, the Blade — work the other way round, and this is the insight the category almost never carries. They form by being controlled, transformed or bound: the Killings want the Eating God restraining them, or the Seal turning them into support. They break by being fed and left unmanaged — Killings generated by Wealth with nothing to check them.

Which means a chart built on a “fierce” god is not a worse chart. A Seven Killings structure with something to manage it is a formed structure, and it reads as command rather than as pressure.

The chart the other pages use — Day Master 辛, born in high summer. The month’s main qi is 丁 fire, which to 辛 is Seven Killings, so this is a Seven Killings structure with a weak self: on the face of it, the intimidating case.

Read the fourth line. The engine records a rescue alongside three formed configurations — something in the chart repairing a weakness elsewhere in it. That is not an unusual finding. It is the normal shape of a real chart.

If you take one idea from this page, take this one. The tradition names two situations that sit between clean success and clean failure:

成中有败 — a formed structure carrying something that works against it. The Officer is well generated by Wealth, and a Hurting Officer sits exposed in the chart too.

败中有成 — a broken structure carrying its own rescue. The Officer is met by Hurting Officer, and a Seal is present to discipline the Hurting Officer, so the damage is repaired by something already in the chart.

The classical literature treats this as the most important pattern in the whole framework, and the reason is plain once stated: most real charts are one or the other. Cleanly formed and cleanly broken are the rare cases. A reading that sorts people into those two bins is not being decisive; it is flattening the thing it is supposed to be reading.

It is a structure with something working against what it needs. That is the whole of the definition, and three things follow from it that the frightening version leaves out.

It is about the chart, not the life. A break is a relation between characters — this thing damages what that thing needs. It is not a sentence, and nothing in the method turns it into events or dates.

It usually comes with a rescue, or can meet one. That is what 救应 names, and rescues arrive from the chart itself or from the decades it moves through — a season that brings the missing element does exactly what a rescue does.

And it changes the reading rather than ending it. When a structure is damaged, the question becomes what the chart needs in order to work anyway — which is the judgement the 用神 page is about, and the first route it tries is the structural one.

One more dimension, and it is a grade rather than a type. A chart is 清 — clear — when its qi moves without fighting itself: one thing in command, the path from it unobstructed. It is 浊 — muddied — when forces war or mix: Officer and Killings jumbled together, Wealth and Seal at each other’s throats.

Clear is easier to read and easier to live from; muddied is not a defect of character. It describes a chart with more crossing traffic, where the reading has to say which force is actually getting through — and where a good reading is more useful, not less.
