How a year is read (流年)

A year in BaZi (流年, liú nián, the flowing year) is read by setting that year’s pair of characters against your chart.

The main question is simple. Does this year bring what your chart leans on, or ask more of it? The answer is a tone, not a forecast.

A year is a pair of characters

Every year has its own stem and branch, just as your birth year does. 2027 is 丁未: the stem 丁 is fire and the branch 未 is the Goat, an earth branch. The year runs from 立春 (lì chūn), the start of spring, to the next one.

2027 丁未

branch 未 Goat · earth · hides 己 丁 乙
The facts of the year, from the engine. A year sits inside a ten-year luck pillar. 明命|MING reads the decade as the terrain and the year as the weather on it.

The year turns inside a bigger wheel: your luck pillars, each ten years long. A year’s reading never stands apart from the decade around it.

The first question: does the year's stem work for you?

The year’s stem has a relation to your Day Master, one of the Ten Gods. That relation either works for your chart or works against it, judged by what your chart needs. This gives the year its starting tone.

My Season, the part of 明命|MING that reads your decades and years, names the tone in three words. Supportive means the year brings what your chart leans on. Attention means it asks more of it. Mixed means a strong relation pulls the other way.

year stem 丁 fire → Seven Killings · works against this chart
strong relation none (two medium ones: a combination)
tone attention
My Season says "This year takes more effort — around work and
career, things move slower than usual."
Real engine output for the chart the other pages use, as My Season will read 2027 once it arrives. 丁 is Seven Killings to the Day Master 辛, and fire works against this chart, so the tone starts at attention. Only a strong relation could move it, and this year has none.

Only a strong relation can change the tone. 明命|MING counts three: the year repeating your decade’s pair (岁运并临), the year’s stem checking and its branch clashing a pillar at once (天克地冲), and the year clashing your month branch (冲提纲). A milder relation, such as the year repeating one of your own pillars (伏吟), is noted but does not move the tone. A tone that moved on every small relation would move most years, and then it would tell you nothing.

What the year meets in your chart

The year’s branch also meets your four branches. Each pillar stands for an area of your life: the year pillar for family roots, elders and your wider network; the month pillar for work, parents and siblings; the day pillar for yourself, your partner and home; the hour pillar for children and the results of your work.

The tone is attention, but the year's branch brings something this chart wants: both of its combinations make earth, the element the chart leans on. A reading carries both facts. The year in a line comes from the twelve life-stages, given in plain words.

The year’s branch against your own year branch is what people call 犯太岁 (fàn tài suì). Your Chinese zodiac year explains the five relations 明命|MING checks. Clashes and combinations explains the relations themselves.

Twelve months inside the year

A year holds twelve months, and each month is a pair of characters too. A month starts at a solar term, not on the 1st. Its stem is read the same way as the year’s: does it work for your chart, or against it?

month pair from the month's stem the guide says
1 壬寅 4 Feb Hurting Officer · water Favourable
2 癸卯 6 Mar Eating God · water Favourable
3 甲辰 5 Apr Direct Wealth · wood Attention
4 乙巳 6 May Indirect Wealth · wood Attention
5 丙午 6 Jun Direct Officer · fire Attention
6 丁未 7 Jul Seven Killings · fire Attention
7 戊申 8 Aug Direct Seal · earth Favourable
8 己酉 8 Sep Indirect Seal · earth Favourable

12 癸丑 6 Jan 2028 Eating God · water Favourable
Real engine output from the Yearly Insights for 2027. The last column is the word the guide prints over each pair of months: Attention when the stem works against this chart, Favourable otherwise. A neutral element does not work against you, so it reads Favourable. The guide prints no scores.

The two surfaces treat months differently, and on purpose. My Season reads a month once it arrives. A month still ahead shows its pair of characters and nothing more, so the screen never reads ahead of you. The Yearly Insights, the printed guide to one year, reads all twelve in advance, because it is a guide for the year you are about to walk.

In the guide, each month also carries a few lines on what to make the most of and what to watch. The symbolic stars a month touches add a small, capped weight to it: a quarter of a point each, never more than half a point in all.

Do and Don't, not verdicts

A year reading ends in advice you can use, not a verdict. The guide’s first page puts your chart in plain words, then lists what to do and what to avoid. A later page does the same for each of the four areas of life. My Season does the same in one line: what the year asks of you, and how to walk it.

That is the whole frame. The year sets the weather. Your chart decides what that weather means for you. You decide what to do with it.

What this page is not saying

Not that a year is good or bad. A tone describes what the year asks of your chart. It is not a grade.

Not a forecast of events. A year reading names the weather, not the things that will happen in it.

Not a date to pick or a remedy to buy. 明命|MING chooses no dates and sells no remedies. Customs appear only as tradition, quoted.

Where to go from here

The decade around the year is on luck pillars. The element your chart leans on, which every year is read against, is on what your chart actually needs. Or open My Season and read the years you have already walked.

Common questions

What is 流年 in BaZi?
流年 (liú nián, the flowing year) is the year you are living, read as a pair of characters. 2027 is 丁未. The pair is set against your chart to see whether the year brings what your chart leans on, or asks more of it.
Is 2027 a good year for me?
明命|MING does not grade years as good or bad. It gives a tone — supportive, mixed or attention — and says what the year asks of you. Your own chart decides the tone, not the year alone.
Why does My Season not read next month yet?
My Season reads a month once it arrives, and only shows the pair of characters for months ahead. The Yearly Insights reads all twelve months in advance, because it is a guide for the year you are about to walk.
Can I buy a Yearly Insights guide for someone else?
Yes. On the Yearly Insights page, under your own guide, add a family member or friend. You enter their name, date and time of birth and gender. You confirm that they have agreed, or that they are your child. Then you buy the guide for them. It is drawn from their chart and kept on your account. You download it and pass it on however you like. It is the guide only: Ask 明命 stays with your own account. Like every guide, it is not refunded.
Does the year decide what happens to me?
No. A year reading names the weather you are walking in, not events. It never picks a date, and it never sells a remedy.
