What 明命|MING does not compute

A reading is defined as much by what it leaves out as by what it includes — and most sources never say what they left out.

明命|MING keeps a written registry of every classical concept its engine deliberately does not compute, or computes but keeps on a leash, each with its reason. This page is that registry in plain words. Its rule is simple: if a concept is absent from the engine and absent from the registry, that is a bug in the registry.

Why publish silences at all

Because a silent omission cannot be argued with, and a stated one can. The category has a long habit of concepts accreting — every school’s extra star, every almanac’s extra rule — until a chart can be made to mean anything. The guard against that drift is not to compute less; it is to say, for each concept, what it is allowed to do.

The registry sorts its silences into four kinds, and this page keeps the same four: things shown but never reasoned from; things computed but leashed; things not computed yet, with what would have to be true first; and things excluded, with the reason.

Shown, never reasoned from

Two families sit on the chart as reference and are never consulted by the reasoning. 纳音 — the poetic names the sixty pairs carry, “roadside earth”, “hairpin gold” — are displayed for every pillar and never enter the judgement of structure, strength or need; they are the readiest handle for a reading to drift on, which is exactly why they are held out. One bounded exception is on the record: a colour formula in the daily reading uses pillar 纳音, because it was the formula that fit the measured data — an 89% match — and that use never feeds back into a verdict about the chart. 胎元 and 命宫, the conception and life palaces, are reference only if ever shown, with no reasoning and no timing power.

computed · displayed · never reasoned from
Real engine output for the chart the other pages use. Every pillar's 纳音 and 空亡 are computed and can be shown — and none of it is permitted to argue. Here the day pillar's 空亡 falls on 寅卯, and the chart has neither, so nothing is marked; had it, the marker would appear and still change no verdict.

Computed, kept on a leash

The symbolic stars (神煞). Forty-three rules are computed for every chart. They are auxiliary and descriptive: visible behind the “why” of a reading, never allowed to override the structure or the elements the chart needs. They are vivid, which is precisely why the leash exists — a vivid star given the last word is the commonest way a reading stops being a reading. For the chart the other pages use, ten of them fire — 天乙贵人, 华盖, 将星, 劫煞, 孤鸾煞 among them — and not one of the ten moves the verdict on strength, structure or need by a hair.

空亡 (旬空). Computed as a marker, displayed, and forbidden to do the thing it is most often used for: it never cancels a root, and never flips a verdict of strength or structure. A storehouse is not an emptiness, and an emptiness is not an absence — the tests for strength and for special structures do not see it. Strong or weak is judged on what is actually there.

羊刃, twice. The blade appears both as a star and as a structure type, on different layers of the reading — and both are legitimate. The two are kept apart rather than merged, so that a marker never gets promoted into a structure by accident.

Not computed yet — and what would have to be true first

These are positions, not a roadmap. Each names the condition that would have to hold before the concept was computed; none of them is promised.

The full twelve life-stages (十二长生). Rootedness — whether the Day Master has ground under it — already carries what matters for the reading, and the doctrine is already set: the stages are secondary and never overturn the primary structure. Computing all twelve would need the validation loop to show they add something rootedness does not.

True solar time and birthplace. The clock-time basis is locked and stated — the Singapore and Malaysia frame assumed, births near a boundary flagged. An opt-in precise mode would need to exist before the correction did; Is BaZi accurate? names the convention.

Readings of your relatives (六亲). An internal reference table exists; nothing from it is surfaced, by decision — a reading is of the person holding it. Compatibility (合婚). Nothing is built, deliberately; there is no second chart in the product to match against. Hour-level timing (流时). Out, until a real use case exists — the day is the finest grain the reading speaks at.

Excluded, with the reason

Childhood luck (小运 / 童限运). The schools genuinely contradict each other on the method — one counts from the hour pillar, another one year per position — and a method that cannot be stated cleanly should not be run quietly. The years before the first decade are shown as a state, not scored.

Virtual characters (拱夹 · 暗合 · 暗冲). Characters implied but not present in the chart invite reading things into it; nothing in structure, need, strength or timing consumes them. Contested combinations (争合 · 妒合) carry no meaning on their own — they are consulted only as a blocker on one special-structure test. Two-force and follow-the-qi structures (两神成象 · 从气) are detected but reach the reading only as a fallback, never as a confident verdict.

The five-role vocabulary (仇神 · 闲神). Two states — helps, does not help — carry every decision the five did; what your chart actually needs states the position. Splitting a decade five-and-five between its stem and branch: the pair is read as one, with any half-cycle emphasis kept secondary.

Timing power for reference concepts. The life palace, the conception palace, 空亡 entering a decade, 纳音 clashes across years — none of these is given any say over timing; reference stays reference. Direction stars (三煞 and the yearly directional taboos) belong to 风水, the reading of place, not to the reading of a chart. Almanac-grade stars whose rules vary by school (金匱 · 龙德 · 天财) are cut rather than half-kept.

The old rules for women’s charts (古法女命). Rejected on value grounds, not technical ones: those frames read the same character as ambition in one chart and misfortune in another because of who is holding it. Here gender changes one computational input — the direction the decades run — and nothing about what any symbol is allowed to mean.

The rule behind the ledger — and its corrections

The registry’s standing rule is the one this page opened with: if a concept is absent from the engine and absent from the registry, that is a bug in the registry. Silences are published, not slipped.

It also keeps a corrections log, which is the part worth trusting. An early review claimed 空亡 was “absent entirely”; it was not — it was computed under its other name, 旬空, and the leash had to be written down properly. The claim that no census of the symbolic stars existed was wrong too. The registry records that it was wrong, and what the correction was. A ledger of silences that never had to correct itself would be the one to doubt.

What this page is not saying

Not that these concepts are worthless. Several are real, old, and used seriously by real schools. These are statements about what this engine lets decide — positions, not verdicts on the tradition.

Not a promise of features. The “not yet” rows name a condition, not a date. Nothing on this page is coming soon.

Not the refusals you meet as a reader. Those — no events, no dates, no matching, no remedies — have their own page: what 明命|MING will not tell you. This page is the engine’s side of the same honesty.

Not “明命|MING computes less”. It computes the stars, the markers and the poetic names for every chart. What it refuses is to let them decide.

Where to go from here

The three judgements the leashes protect are the three pages that explain them: strength, the ten relations, and what the chart needs. Or open the “why” on any line of your own reading — the leashed stars are there, describing, and never once deciding.

Common questions

Does 明命|MING use the symbolic stars (神煞)?
It computes them — forty-three rules — and shows them behind the 'why' of a reading. It never lets one override the structure or the elements the chart needs. They describe; they do not decide.
Does it use 空亡 or 纳音?
Both are computed and shown for every pillar, and neither is allowed to argue. 空亡 is a marker that never cancels a root or flips a verdict; 纳音 never enters the reasoning about structure, strength or need. The one bounded exception — a colour formula in the daily reading uses pillar 纳音 — never feeds back into any verdict about the chart.
Why is there no 小运 — the childhood luck before the first decade?
Because the schools contradict each other on how to compute it, and a method that cannot be stated cleanly should not be run quietly. The years before your first decade pillar are shown as a state, not scored.
Will it compute the full twelve life-stages, or compatibility, later?
Neither is computed today, and this page says what would have to be true before either was — which is a position, not a promise. The twelve stages would need the validation loop to prove they add to what rootedness already captures; compatibility would need a second chart to exist in the product, and there is none, by design.
